203. Construction d’une base orthonormale avec des matrices

Soit $E$ l’ensemble des polynômes de $\R[X]$ dont le degré est inférieur ou égal à $2.$

Munissez $E$ du produit scalaire suivant :

$\begin{align*}
\forall (P,Q)\in E^2, \langle P, Q \rangle = \int_{0}^{1} P(x)Q(x)\text{d}x.
\end{align*}$

Considérez la famille $(1,X,X^2).$ C’est une base de $E.$

Etablissez la matrice du produit scalaire de cette famille

Posez $P_1(X) = 1$, $P_2(X) = X$ et $P_3(X) = X^2.$

Vous calculez tous les produits scalaires $\langle P_i, P_j \rangle$, où $i$ et $j$ sont deux entiers compris entre $1$ et $3.$

$\begin{align*}
\langle P_1, P_1 \rangle &= \int_{0}^{1} P_1(x)^2\text{d}x\\
&= \int_{0}^{1} 1\text{d}x\\
&= \int_{0}^{1} \text{d}x\\
&=1.
\end{align*}$

$\begin{align*}
\langle P_1, P_2 \rangle &= \int_{0}^{1} P_1(x)P_2(x)\text{d}x\\
&= \int_{0}^{1} x\text{d}x\\
&= \left[\frac{x^2}{2}\right]\\
&=\frac{1}{2}.
\end{align*}$

$\begin{align*}
\langle P_1, P_3 \rangle &= \int_{0}^{1} P_1(x)P_3(x)\text{d}x\\
&= \int_{0}^{1} x^2\text{d}x\\
&= \left[\frac{x^3}{3}\right]\\
&=\frac{1}{3}.
\end{align*}$

$\begin{align*}
\langle P_2, P_2 \rangle &= \int_{0}^{1} P_2(x)P_2(x)\text{d}x\\
&= \int_{0}^{1} x^2\text{d}x\\
&=\frac{1}{3}.
\end{align*}$

$\begin{align*}
\langle P_2, P_3 \rangle &= \int_{0}^{1} P_2(x)P_3(x)\text{d}x\\
&= \int_{0}^{1} x^3\text{d}x\\
&= \left[\frac{x^4}{4}\right]\\
&=\frac{1}{4}.
\end{align*}$

$\begin{align*}
\langle P_3, P_3 \rangle &= \int_{0}^{1} P_3(x)^2\text{d}x\\
&= \int_{0}^{1} x^4\text{d}x\\
&= \left[\frac{x^5}{5}\right]\\
&=\frac{1}{5}.
\end{align*}$

Compte tenu de la symétrie du produit scalaire, la matrice de ce dernier, calculée dans la famille $(P_1,P_2,P_3)$ est égale à :

$\begin{align*}
A&=\begin{pmatrix}
\langle P_i, P_j \rangle
\end{pmatrix}_{\substack{1\leq i \leq 3 \\ 1\leq j \leq 3}} \\
&=\begin{pmatrix}
1 & 1/2 & 1/3\\
1/2 & 1/3 & 1/4\\
1/3 & 1/4 & 1/5
\end{pmatrix}.
\end{align*}$

Utilisez des opérations élémentaires pour rendre cette matrice diagonale

Dans la partie gauche, vous allez utiliser la même opération élémentaire sur les lignes et les colonnes.

Dans la partie droite, vous mémorisez les opérations en effectuant l’opération élémentaire uniquement sur les colonnes en partant de la matrice identité notée $I.$

Cela fournit les calculs suivants :

$\begin{align*}\begin{array}{c|c}
A \xrightarrow[C_2\leftarrow C_2-1/2 C_1]{} \begin{pmatrix}
1 & 0 & 1/3\\
1/2 & 1/12 & 1/4\\
1/3 & 1/12 & 1/5
\end{pmatrix} \xrightarrow[L_2\leftarrow L_2-1/2 L_1]{} {}^{t}P_1AP_1 = \begin{pmatrix}
1 & 0 & 1/3\\
0 & 1/12 & 1/12\\
1/3 & 1/12 & 1/5
\end{pmatrix} &
I \xrightarrow[C_2 \leftarrow C_2-1/2 C_1]{} P_1 = \begin{pmatrix}
1 & -1/2 & 0\\
0 & 1 & 0\\
0 & 0 & 1
\end{pmatrix}\\
\end{array}\end{align*}$

$\begin{align*}\begin{array}{c|c}
{}^{t}P_1AP_1 \xrightarrow[C_3\leftarrow C_3-1/3 C_1]{} \begin{pmatrix}
1 & 0 & 0\\
0 & 1/12 & 1/12\\
1/3 & 1/12 & 4/45
\end{pmatrix} \xrightarrow[L_3\leftarrow L_3-1/3 L_1]{} {}^{t}P_2AP_2 = \begin{pmatrix}
1 & 0 & 0\\
0 & 1/12 & 1/12\\
0 & 1/12 & 4/45
\end{pmatrix} &
P_1 \xrightarrow[C_3 \leftarrow C_3-1/3 C_1]{} P_2 = \begin{pmatrix}
1 & -1/2 & -1/3\\
0 & 1 & 0\\
0 & 0 & 1
\end{pmatrix}\\
\end{array}\end{align*}$

$\begin{align*}\begin{array}{c|c}
{}^{t}P_2AP_2 \xrightarrow[C_3\leftarrow C_3-C_2]{} \begin{pmatrix}
1 & 0 & 0\\
0 & 1/12 & 1/12\\
0 & 0 & 1/180
\end{pmatrix} \xrightarrow[L_3\leftarrow L_3-L_2]{} {}^{t}PAP = \begin{pmatrix}
1 & 0 & 0\\
0 & 1/12 & 0\\
0 & 0 & 1/180
\end{pmatrix} &
P_2 \xrightarrow[C_3 \leftarrow C_3-C_2]{} P = \begin{pmatrix}
1 & -1/2 & 1/6\\
0 & 1 & -1\\
0 & 0 & 1
\end{pmatrix}.
\end{array}\end{align*}$

Lisez la matrice de passage obtenue

Il a été établi que :

$\begin{align*}
P = \begin{pmatrix}
1 & -1/2 & 1/6\\
0 & 1 & -1\\
0 & 0 & 1
\end{pmatrix}.
\end{align*}$

En lisant colonne par colonne, vous notez $Q_1(X) = 1\cdot P_1(X)=1$, puis $Q_2(X) = -\frac{1}{2} \cdot P_1(X)+1\cdot P_2(X) = -\frac{1}{2} + X$ et enfin $Q_3(X) = \frac{1}{6}\cdot P_1(X)-1\cdot P_2(X)+1\cdot P_3(X) = \frac{1}{6}-X+X^2.$

D’après ce qui précède la famille $(Q_1,Q_2,Q_3)$ est orthogonale et :

$\begin{align*}
\langle Q_1,Q_1 \rangle &= 1\\
\langle Q_2,Q_2 \rangle &= \frac{1}{12}\\
\langle Q_3,Q_3 \rangle &= \frac{1}{180}.
\end{align*}$

Posez $R_1 = Q_1$, $R_2 = \sqrt{12}Q_2 = 2\sqrt{3} Q_2 $ puis $R_3 =\sqrt{180} Q_3 = 6\sqrt{5} Q_3.$

Alors la famille $(R_1, R_2, R_3)$ est orthonormale où :

$\begin{align*}
R_1(X) &= 1\\
R_2(X) &= -\sqrt{3} + 2\sqrt{3}X\\
R_3(X) &= \sqrt{5}-6\sqrt{5}X+6\sqrt{5}X^2.
\end{align*}$
